How many matches does a European season add?
Build a club’s season — competition, entry round, cup runs — and count the matches, the midweeks and the Thursday-to-Sunday turnarounds.
A league season is 38 rounds, one a week. Everything else — Europe, both domestic cups — must be wedged into the same ten months, almost all of it into midweeks. The deepest plausible run turns those 38 games into 67, with 29 weeks holding two matches; a Scottish champion’s season kicks off in the second week of July, before some leagues have finished their transfer business. A Premier League club that finishes 9th–24th in the Champions League league phase, wins it via the knockout playoff, and reaches both domestic cup finals — the maximum-congestion season.
This is a calendar model, not a fixture list: each competition’s rounds sit in their real calendar slots, and league games squeezed off their weekends are displaced into free midweeks — the mechanism, not any club’s actual season.

Scotland’s champion starts Champions League qualifying in July, loses in it, parachutes down two rungs, and reaches the Conference League league phase — a European season that is mostly qualifiers. The model makes that 60 matches — 17 of them midweek, 17 weeks holding two games, 10 Thursday-to-weekend turnarounds — starting Jul w2, with the first European tie in Jul w3, and 20 matches more than the league-only baseline.
Europa League final run. A Premier League club enters the Europa League league phase, finishes top eight, and reaches the final on a diet of Thursday nights — with mid-depth cup runs. The model makes that 59 matches — 21 of them midweek, 21 weeks holding two games, 14 Thursday-to-weekend turnarounds — starting Aug w3, with the first European tie in Sep w3, and 19 matches more than the league-only baseline.
League only. The baseline: a mid-table club with no European football and early cup exits. One match a week, most weeks. The model makes that 40 matches — 2 of them midweek, 2 weeks holding two games — starting Aug w3.
